drink it up: banana eggnog smoothie

Alright, I swear, this is my last beverage post for a little while. 3 drink posts in a row? Well, I guess it’s time to bottoms up!

For anyone who has been reading this blog for a while knows that I’m not a big fan of bananas. Sure, I do love a slice of banana bread once in awhile, but I certainly can’t stomach one outta the peel, caramelized with butter or popped into a smoothie. No way, not this girl! But, my husband is smitten with the fruit and because I’m smitten with him, I’ll go ahead and caramelize some bananas as a topping to his waffle and I’ll blend up a frozen banana into his smoothie. He’s definitely a lucky man and he knows it!

This morning I decided to surprise him with a special seasonal smoothie….and I used another ingredient that he loves and I hate: eggnog. I remember my mom making eggnog from scratch around the holidays and loving it. It wasn’t sickly sweet or gag-inducingly thick but ever since those long ago days, I’ve stayed away from the stuff. Commercial varieties – even the organic stuff in a bottle from Avalon – still makes me gag. But Cornelius loves eggnog and my special breakfast smoothie didn’t disappoint.

Thank you!!! Everyone’s been offering me egg nog at parties and I keep saying “gag me”.

I’m making this tomorrow! yum! Ok, but the thickness of egg nog is one of my favorite things about it!

You can just keep on posting beverage recipes…there are never enough of them around, and these sound so yummy!

Yup, not a fan of egg nog either…it was not something I was exposed to growing up and never acquired a taste for it but then again I was not exposed to sushi growing up and I love the stuff! Go figure 🙂
Bananas in desserts I can handle, otherwise fogedaboudit…heh… heh.

Stephanie, I’m totally with you on the nog. Yuck!

Darla, so funny because Cornelius says the same thing! He hates the thickness but LOVES the taste. Go figure!

Thanks Crystal! I agree that there should be more drink postings!

Yeah, Joanne, nog is just way too thick and sweet. Not my thing. Now sushi….!

It’s funny because for most of my life I thought I hated egg nog (although I don’t think I ever tried it!). Something about the name made it very unappealing to me. But after I got married, my husband made me try it and it turns out that I really like it. I don’t drink it much but I definitely try to have some spiked egg nog at least once a season! This smoothie definitely sounds like it would be a husband pleaser in my house also. Thanks!

P.S.– I made the smoothie for our breakfast this morning and we LOVE it. Too bad egg nog season is almost over. . .

I go through banana moods. Sometimes I love them, and sometimes I can’t stand them. Right now I’m in a love them mood. When I was a kid they made me sick.
I just had this awesome banana smoothie at this great brunch resteraunt here in Toronto. It was chocolate soy, peanut butter and bananas! Sooooo good.
The trick to banana smoothies is definitely the frozen banana though.

i really love the silknog (made by silk) that comes out this time of year. i agree about the overly sweet and thick premade varieties you can purchase, but this is thin and light and doesn’t have that gross feeling/taste afterwards.

I love eggnog, but only for about three sips. Most of the carton varities I’ve tried are quite overwhelmingly rich. The eggnog smoothie does sound good though.

nicole, i just can’t get into the nog. i think it just might be true about the name!

awesome, darla! so glad you loved it too!

beth, a few weeks ago i made cornelius a smoothie just like the one you mentioned. i used frozen banana, milk and chocolate/peanut butter soy ice cream. he loved every slurp!

alison, i think it’s the thickness of the whole nog experience that gets me!

aria, let me know how it turns out! i think i’m starting a nog/banana smoothie revolution here 😉

crystal, so funny you mentioning that because my friend suggested soy nog as well. maybe i’ll have to give it a try this season!
