salted butterscotch oatmeal cookies

Last week my good old friend left Vancouver and headed back to the South. The night before she left, I decided to make some cookies for her to take back on the plane. If she had to leave the sunny and very spring-like Vancouver weather for the snowed in streets of Durham NC, she might as well take something nice for the harried trip home. She, like myself, appreciates the sweet and the salty together in one bite and these oatmeal cookies turned out to be pretty delicious. I was initially worried about using butterscotch chips but the salt really helped to tame that kid-friendly flavour into something almost sophisticated. Well, maybe not sophisticated, but something that at least goes well with coffee or a double-strength earl grey tea. Crispy, salty and sweet, these oatmeal cookies turned out quite tasty. You can get the recipe over at Poppytalk.

Interested in a little winter libation? How ’bout sneaking over to ReadyMade and checking out my Olympic spirits? A little Maple Leaf Sour to warm you up while watching all that snow and ice on television? I think so. Make mine a double!

Blog Aid Recipes for: Haiti Cookbook update:
Just this very second, I got a knock from Canada Post at my door. Inside of the box was the Blog Aid cookbook. After tearing up the packaging, I’m just stunned at how wonderful the book looks and I’m already drooling over the recipes. The cookbook sales were spectacular and all told $47,166 was raised and sent to Haiti!! So a big thank you to everyone who bought a copy. You can find out more about this project here.

These look amazing, and I am going to have to make them this weekend.

Recent local discovery on the sweet-and-salty front, have you tried the fleur de sel caramels at the little chocolatier on 21st and Main? Go. Go now. I think the place is called Nouvelle France, but I could be wrong. They are buttery, melty heaven.

You had me at "salted"… and then you mentioned butterscotch. Sounds phenomenal. And I'll take one of those maple leaf sours alongside too!

Mmm. These sound lovely. I made brownies the other night with a bit of sea salt and toffee…the salt just does it!

I'm waiting anxiously for my cookbook too! Yeah!
I hope you don't hold it against me but I am currently on a low-carb diet. So far I've lost 8lbs this past month. I had to do it. None of my clothes fit any more. I was also feeling sluggish and low energy all the time. And I also realized I have a serious addiction to sugar and flour-based goods (cookies, cakes, bread, pasta)hence my decision to go low-carb. Of course the good news is the weight loss and having much more energy. The bad news is I want to make (and devour!!) these salted butterscotch cookies so badly and I can't right now! I can only imagine how great they tasted 🙂 Congrats again on the ReadyMade gig!

WOW … what a beautiful book!!! You folks did an amazing job in putting this book together on such short notice and spreading the word through your blogs and twitter to raise an incredible about of money for Haiti. I received my book in the mail yesterday — it makes me feel proud to have helped, even if in a small way. And now that I've had a chance to look through the book, I can't wait to try your Orange Crumb Cake — Mahalo!

Me too, RecipeGirl! Couldn't have done anything without Julie, she was so fantastic. Three cheers!

emvandee, never heard of the place before. Will have to get myself down there pronto.

Ha, definitely Lo! I like your enthusiasm.

Maggie, I so agree about the salt. Now do tell about those brownies.

    So glad you approve, vickys!

Thanks Bijoux, yeah, who doesn't have an addition to flour & sugar! Good luck with your new program.

Mynda, that cake is a goodie. Hope you enjoy it!

muffin, I hope you enjoy the cookies. They are pretty tasty!

The weather is crazy amazing, Joanne. Cherry blossoms in January. I feel so bad for everywhere else with all that snow.

Dawn, I knew I could count on your support 😉

How funny is it that there is less snow in the north than in the south! The cookies look great!

stephchows, I know! I can't believe how much snow has fallen elsewhere. However, Vancouver has the mildest Canadian climate and we rarely get much snow in the winter!
