I think I have discovered my most favorite chocolate chip cookie ever. This one has it all: chocolate, nuts and that beloved chew and crisp that any true chocolate chip cookie worth its salt must have. It’s perfect. Plus, it’s got a nice chug of maple in there, so take that you old regular cookie! This one trumps all.
Okay, okay, I haven’t made that most famous 36 hour cookie recipe yet from the New York Times, but I did try that exact cookie at a certain Seattle pizza restaurant (yup, that’s the one) and still I liked this one more. Yes, really. Want to sprinkle some flaky Maldon salt over top before you bake it? Sure, go ahead because I’m going to do just that next time.
My husband claims that I am prone to exaggeration. Don’t believe him. But if you doubt any of my claims, hear me out. A friend who tried these cookies on the weekend declared they were the best chocolate chip cookie she had ever had. And she said it out loud in a room full of people. So take that! If you need more convincing, they’re also super easy to make. There’s no fussing with sifting dry ingredients or adding in the flour at different times. Nope! No rubbish like that. If you can mix, you can have cookies in no time flat. I think I’ve set some weekend cookie baking in motion, haven’t I? Make the people in your house happy, make yourself happy. Make a double batch.
chocolate chip maple walnut cookies
(adapted from Dinner with Julie)
1/4 c butter, softened
1 c packed brown sugar
1/4 c pure maple syrup (the good stuff!!)
1 large egg
1 t maple extract
1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 t baking soda
1/4 t salt
3/4 c dark chocolate chips
3/4 c chopped walnutsPreheat oven to 350. In a large bowl, combine the butter, brown sugar, extract and maple syrup together. Add in the egg and combine until fluffy. Dump in the flour, baking soda and salt and stir until just blended before adding the chocolate chips and walnuts and stirring again. Drop by tablespoon 2 inches apart onto a parchment or silpat covered cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the edges are just golden. Transfer to wire rack to cool. Makes 24 cookies.
Mixing is something I can certainly do! I'm always on the lookout for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe. I will have to give this one a go! I love that it has maple in it.
I'm bookmarking these right now – how can one resist a cookie with chocolate and maple?
These are beautiful!
mmm it's that time of year, for drop cookies!
Uh oh, looks like I'm baking up a batch of these tonight while reheating our leftover carrot rice soup!
Good timing too, I owe friends a batch of cookies. 🙂
These look so amazing! anything with nuts and chocolate that is chewy I'm in…I'm so making them tonight
Oh cookie, how do I love thee!! I never tire of cookies, I'd make these right now if I had an egg and some walnuts and butter…but I don't so I'll just eat a handful of chocolate chips and pretend I'm eating cookies!! This is a keeper 🙂
Ooh, I'm always up for another chocolate chip cookies recipe. And with maple? Perfect!
I made a batch yesterday . They are incredible!! Thanks for a great recipe!
Ok, I'm convinced. I've got some good maple syrup in my kitchen and I'm not afraid to use it. Cookies here I come!
I've been searching for the perfect chocolate chip cookie for a long time now. I love the maple syrup idea!
I made these last night with a friend. I replaced the walnuts with pecans and the extract with vanilla extract. They were delicious!! Perfectly chewy cookie, that in certain bites tasted like pecan pie. Thanks for sharing!
Joanne, I think you can do more than mix 🙂 The maple is good here!
Thanks Patricia!
Amelia, it's always time for drop cookies if you ask me!
Samantha, these go perfectly with the carrot rice soup 😉 Remember to save a bunch for yourself too!
Monday, I hope you love them!
Bijoux, try them because I know you'll love them. They are cookie perfection.
Thanks Lynn. These are perfect.
Yay, glad you liked them Staci!
Daily Spud, I hope you and the cookie met a delicious ending.
Halley, so glad you loved them. Ooh, pecan pie. Yum.
Thanks Amaranthian!
Wow, just made a batch. Used double-strength vanilla (instead of maple extract) and pecans. The dough itself was fantastic. It was very candy-like. The cookies were very good, too. It's funny how something like maple syrup instead of white sugar could make such a difference. Thanks for sharing.
Maple syrup? I'm intrigued. I'm also always looking for improvement on perfection – and I do think the NY Times cookies are pretty darn close. I'll make these next chocolate chip cookie time!
YUM, I love maple and these sound great.
These cookies look great- and I love the maple syrup you added.
How curious. Just when I was in need of a cookie recipe to begin holiday baking decisions! I'm sure my husband won't mind at all if I make these today as "testers."
Just pulled these out of the oven…WOW…yum. Thanks for the recipe–they were super easy and taste great!
Hmm. I made them (doubled the recipe as per your suggestion) but they spread a bit too much. Remedies for next time?
Oh, I couldn't resist trying these. And I'm glad I did. They were so great! I expected more of a maple flavor though.
Really, maple??? I LOVE chocolate chip cookies…but I am not a huge fan of this maple ( it's ok). So I must admit I am a bit skeptical. And since I am not a big maple fan I would have to go out and buy maple products to make them…so it would be an investment…how maply are they?
Though I do love the idea of a little sea salt on them.
Just made these tonight and they are DELICIOUS! I didn't have the nuts, but prefer cookies w/o them anyways, and they were so tasty! Almost like a candy w/ all that brown sugar & maple syrup, and I love how little butter there is! Thanks for sharing!
hmmm, i'm debating about chocolate chip cookies for dinner. would that be so wrong? 🙂
Maple and walnut in a chocolate chip cookie??? I've just died and gone to cookie heaven!
Ooo I must try these! Love that there's maple in there.
yowza! these sound perfect!
the maple extract totally caught my eye!
PhillyGirl, so glad you loved the coookies.
Kali, I hope you enjoyed the "testers"! Good on you for starting your holiday baking early.
Thanks Dana, the maple syrup influences texture more than taste, I think.
Thanks Melynda & Barbara!
Hmmm, that's odd Kali! Mine didn't spread all that much. Maybe your butter was too soft? Chill them for a bit before baking?
Hooray, anon! Glad you loved them.
Me too Steph! Maybe more maple extract next time.
Hag, I think the maple is more for the texture. I wouldn't run out and buy syrup for these, but you could try honey instead and let me know how they turn out.
Michelle, I know! The small amount of butter is what made me want to make them. The taste makes me want to make them again.
Giao, nope, not wrong at all.
Cookiepie, they are pretty heavenly!
Thanks eatme!
Oh Kelly, they are. Trust me.
Stephchows, definitely a good cupboard investment.
i can't wait to try these–they sound fantastic! i love maple syrup. i love walnuts. i love chocolate. i strongly believe you can never go wrong with chocolate chip cookies. and therefore, based on all of the above, i may need to make these sometime. thanks for sharing. do you know how many times i've bookmarked your recipes? well actually, you're already in my feed, but…well, you know what i mean! 🙂
I am going to make these IMMEDIATELY.
*runs to kitchen*
bellcurves, thanks! Hope these live up to your expectations.
tasha, enjoy!!
Yay! I made these the other day and they were great! I did double the batch and got just 36 smallish cookies, though. Chocolate + coconut =)
Glad you loved them Katina. I always wonder why sometimes cookies never come out to the number they are supposed to? That happens all the time to me as well.
I made these tonight and they are delicious! I didn't have maple extract so I just used pure vanilla extract. I just wanted to mention that in the instructions section there is no mention of when to add the extract…or maybe I'm just blind :)…LOL!
Glad you liked them, Bijoux! And I made the correction to the recipe. Thanks!
All I can think of to say is, um, YUM! Definitely have to try to make these.
I just finished making these, they turned out well. Not much maple flavour and very chocolate chippie but good. I found that the dough was dry but I think it's because I only had a medium egg. Adding in a tsp of water seemed to help.
Thanks Mrs L!
Anon, I always use large eggs and didn't experience a dry dough issue. It's true about the maple taste being subtle. But glad you liked them anyways 🙂
I just made these for Thanksgiving dinner. They are AMAZING!
My first batch spread a little too much, also. I added a little bit more flour in the second and they turned out perfectly. Thanks!
Darcee glad they worked out. I never had that problem with the spreading, so glad the extra bit of flour fixed that.
They've just come out of the oven! And although I didn't make the maple ones, I followed the link to dinner with julie and made her "lower-fat chocolate cookies". However, you were the initial inspiration. And no, I haven't tried them yet, but I have this really good feeling about them. They look perfect.
Also, just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your blog. I'm from Victoria, but live in Montreal, and really really love to cook (and this blogging thing is pretty cool). Looking forward to coming home to the West coast for christmas and eating with my family. Thanks for all the good recipes, keep it up.

Murph, I'll have to check out the link to the lower fat cookies…ideal for the holidays, I think! Thanks so much for the nice words about my blog too. Enjoy your west coast holidays (and I love Montreal to bits).
hihi! i'm originally from seattle, wa and i can't think of the pizza restaurant cookie you mentioned in this post. would you mind letting me know?
thank you for your time–i love reading your blog and i'm definitely going to make these cookies!
Hi Mari, it's Delancey with the good cookies (though I think these are better!). It's a great restaurant with really yummy pizza.
Hi made these awhile back doubling the recipe. I made some and sent to work with husband. Found the dough in back of fridge and made the rest this past weekend. They are REALLY incredible. I think they have a ton of maple flavor. Gave some to a friend and she said they were fantastic too. I highly recommend them if you're a chocchipcookie hound, like me.
Hi raifana, don't know what regular flour is…I always thought all-purpose was regular plain flour. Maybe your butter was too soft? Maybe your measurements were off? No idea.
hi, i tried making this but while the cookies were delicious, they all turned out wafer-thin and flat. i doubled the recipe and substituted all-purpose flour for plain flour, and maple extract for vanilla essence. what could have gone wrong? was it the flour? i'd really like to give this recipe another shot. thanks.
Hi
What type of maple syrup did you use in this recipe, Grade A dark, medium or light or Grade B etc.
Hi Jackie, I think it was B grade maple syrup – but I don’t exactly remember as I currently don’t have any in the house.
Holy Helena, these are amazing. I’m three down and they just came out of the oven.
Oh my gosh! These are so amazing! I made these for my literature class and they were gone within moments! I can’t believe I gave them away and that you weren’t exaggerating when you said these were just that amazing! I replaced the walnuts with pecans and it was magnificent.
Thanks, for posting such an amazing recipe even if it was four years ago!
Okay- I am off to make theses for Hubs Birthday today! He isn’t a Cake eater and requested Maple walnut Chocolate Chip cookies. I wasn’t impressed with the last recipe I tried, and this one looks easy, yummy with greag reviews!
Stay tuned for my family reviews (:
Ali, hope you & your husband enjoy them!
Thank you so much for this much loved recipe! What a hit, not only did the Birthday Boy love and stash several for later (: But we all enjoyed them greatly!
