better than from a bakery granola

I love granola for breakfast. Not only do I make it quite frequently, but I do often order it when going out for breakfast. I’m a bit of a granola snob and I definitely know what I like. This granola found in Baked: New Frontiers in Baking cookbook is great. Like really, really great.

Look at it, this granola has clusters! Every granola I have made, while delicious & wholesome, doesn’t have the goodness that makes them clump up like the granola found at a great bakery. Look no further. This granola clumps, it’s crunchy and it’s easy to make. Sure, there’s a bit more sugar than I’m used to putting in my granola, but it’s worth the extra calories. Do it for the clumps!

Want to make your friends, co-workers and family really happy this holiday? Just bake up a batch, throw it in a large glass jar, top it with a bow, and call it a homemade gift made with love. Better yet, bake up a double batch (I’ve done it and it works beautifully) so you have some for yourself and a friend. Guaranteed happiness.

OMG, J. Do you know that Baked is just down the street from me? And it rules? So happy you're sharing their granola recipe!

I just might be as much of a granola freak as you. Guess what I'm giving for Christmas?

I've never ever had granola….is it an American thing do you think? I didn't really even hear about granola until I started following a bunch of cooking blogs. It looks delicious either way and I'm going to make some as soon as possible!

Once you have homemade granola, you never go back. I like this recipe, but I'm really hooked on the olive oil granola that was published in the New York Times.

YUM! I have 5 huge bags of oats waiting to be turned into granola in my kitchen right now. Granola baking is in the air! I usually skimp on the sugar too, and the result is no clumps…which is of course the best part of granola. I think you've inspired me to go a little sweeter this time. Thanks!

YUM! I have been so hooked on making homemade granola bars lately, and now I am bookmarking this recipe to try, if only for those beautiful clumps!

It's Saturday morning and I just sat down at my computer with a bowl of homemade granola to catch up on some reading. I saw the title of your blog post and had to check it out. Thanks for the recipe! I'll definitely be trying this version soon.

And shockingly, I have all the ingredients ready to go in my pantry! No random pepitas or dried mango needed. Putting this on the top of my must-make pile.

I have to be honest and admit that I have resorted to buying ready made granola (from a box), which is by no means nearly as good as the home made stuff. But it is just easier (read: lazier)to go to the market and buy it. I'm by no means a "granola snob" (LOL) but I do like the crunchy clumps…yes, I certainly have a sweet tooth…so bad is my sweet tooth that I secretly wish one day you'll announce that the big white plop next to your granola is actually whipped cream 😉

Delicious!! Is it wrong that I want this sprinkled over ice cream, instead of having it for breakfast? 🙂

You are so lucky, laviecerise! Envious!

The leftoverist, I think it's the perfect gift!

Tasha, I do think it is a North American thing. We've hosted couch surfers from Europe and they eat muesli. When I've served granola for breakfast, they love it!

Lydia, I'll have to take a look at that one, I've never heard of it!

Thanks Tagan, go sweet! Go for clumps! I'll take a peek at your blog too 🙂

    Me too, Sarah!

Shannalee, I have to give granola bars another chance. I tried making them once and they just turned into delicious granola!

    Glad I could help, Amanda.

Cole, homemade granola is the best. I love this version so much.

    Beth, give it a try!

Ha! Bijoux, the big plop is Fage yogurt which I purchased when in the States recently. It's incredible thick Greek low fat yogurt and I should have bought more than 1 container.

CookiePie, be my guest & sprinkle it where ever you like!

kickpleat: I'm acquainted with FAGE (which means "eat" in Greek) yoghurt as I used to eat it when I lived in Greece. I had no idea it was sold in the US!

Thank you for the reminder! I was brainstorming on what to make for friends and families (and teachers and babysitters and bus drivers) this season and I forgot about granola. I have a tried and true recipe but this one looks terrific!

I am totally sold here–well, except for the raisins…I'll be substituting those 🙂

love the flavor of the granola I already make, but the clumps have indeed been elusive! going to try this weekend as part of the big holiday baking effort. thanks for sharing!

This recipe looks lovely and simple as well! And the funny thing was that I was just looking for a good granola recipe the other day. Do you think it would be good with dried cranberries instead of raisins??

    kickpleat   December 8, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Bijoux, so good to know that you know the glory of Fage. Wish it was available here.

    Enjoy your granola, Steph!

    Harrisburg, glad you approve.

Jess, yup. Clumps. Lots of 'em.

    Enjoy the clumping, Erin!

    tws, why thank you!

Hooray, so glad you loved it Springboots!!

Dana, you can never have too many tried & true granola recipes.

bluejean, sub away! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

vagabondtramp, yes! The original recipe did call for cranberries but I didn't have any so I used raisins. Enjoy!

kickpleat, you always post the most amazing-sounding recipes. And I'm so, so far behind on cooking and baking recipes from your blog! Wah! Help! Maybe one weekend I'll just go all out and devote my weekend kitchen frenzy to your recipes. This granola is going on my list!

I wish I would have seen this post earlier today. I made some homemade granola and while it's still really tasty, I wish it would have clumped. I'll try your recipe next time!

Wow, I have never felt the need to make homemade granola because I never was too crazy about the store-bought stuff. I am so glad you tempted me into trying this because it is DELICIOUS! I bought some maple yogurt to go with and my breakfasts for the past 2 days have been stupendous! Thanks for being a great inspiration!

Hi again! I'm just reporting back to say that this granola is awesome! Very sweet and clumpy, it reminds me of a crunchy oatmeal cookie. It's delicious. I like the whole almonds–I've always chopped the nuts in my granolas, but the whole almonds are very nice.

The only change I made to the recipe was to use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar–a substitution I made out of necessity in my kitchen.

Mmmmm I just made two batches of this; one with dried prineapple, mango and cranberries, and one with currants, sultanas and raisins.
Thanks for providing a recipe that has clusters; they're the best bit!!

I'm coming to this party very late, I know. But, I just discovered this secret for clumping granola, that doesn't involved extra sugar…
Finely grind 1/2 cup of the oats and 1/3 cup of flax seeds per tray of granola you are making (I use a coffee grinder) and just mix it in with the dry ingredients and proceed as normal. That should make things clump nicely 🙂

Finally! A granola I can actually make, tastes great, and doesn’t have a bunch of weird ingredients I never have on hand! It only takes me a week to eat a batch of this granola — I love it so much! Before I found this recipe, I had a jar of store-bought granola sitting in my pantry for well over two months — I just couldn’t eat that stale, tasteless junk anymore. Thanks for posting!

I pray daily that Pinterest never goes away and you never take this post down because I have it pinned and use it weekly to make my big family very happy. We even quadruple it and make one of those batches nut free for my 9-year-old. Thank you so much for this!!!
